WinRAR is, without a doubt, one of the best options on the market when it comes to compressing and decompressing files. Much more than a file compressor and decompressor Although many users may not know it, WinRAR is not a free tool and it is necessary to activate it in order to use it indefinitely and legally. After that time, the user must purchase a license to activate it or completely uninstall it from their computer. WinRAR is a shareware program that offers a free 40-day trial period. Which formats is WinRAR compatible with?ĭespite its name, WinRAR is compatible with most compression formats on the market. And of course, from the app, you can add a password to all your files to keep them always secure. This is of incalculable value when it comes to recovering a corrupt file or one that has not been saved correctly. This makes it much easier to share files with third parties without requiring them to have the program installed.įinally, it is worth noting that WinRAR incorporates a tool for repairing damaged files. These are completely customizable, allowing you to add a description, details, and even change their icon. This greatly facilitates the task of sharing files with third parties without exceeding the limits of services such as email attachments or the capacity of a cloud storage platform.Īnother star feature of WinRAR is that, in addition to compressing and decompressing files in just a couple of clicks, it is also capable of creating self-extracting files. WinRAR is not only capable of compressing files into a single file, but also splitting those with large dimensions into different parts. From it, you can select the files and folders you want to compress as well as explore their content. It is very simple and intuitive, facilitating navigation and allowing any type of user, regardless of their computer knowledge, to use the program without problems. Interface and basic functions: Simplicity and good resultsĪs we have already mentioned, WinRAR has maintained a very similar interface since its inception. That is why it is the preferred option for users around the world looking for a lightweight but powerful program to compress and decompress files of all types. Despite being with us for more than two decades (almost three!), WINRAR maintains the same intuitive interface as in its early days. Some of its main attractions are undoubtedly its speed and ease of use. It has been around for many years and, in fact, it was a pioneer among apps that perform all kinds of compression tasks. WinRAR is a powerful file compressor and decompressor. Would you like to know why? What is WinRAR and what is it used for? Versatile, fast, and secure, WinRAR has become one of the essential apps for any Windows computer. Developed by RARLAB and considered by many as the ultimate rival of WinZIP or 7-Zip, it remains firm as the best option for performing compression and decompression tasks in the main formats of the market (RAR, ZIP, 7Z, ISO, TAR, etc.). WinRAR is one of the tools for compressing and decompressing files most well-known and downloaded from the Internet. It’s free as well, which is always a bonus, of course, although it would be good to see the app available outside of Windows-based systems, and we’d also appreciate a somewhat wider level of support for compression formats.Swati Mishra Updated 10 days ago An essential tool to compress and decompress all file formats. Only months after the publication of her debut, Clarke became ill with what was eventually diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome. What Piranesi is not is the longed-for sequel to JS&MrN. As Clarke says, “You start with an image or the fragment of a story, something that feels like it has very deep roots into the unconscious, like it is going to connect up with a lot of things.” He writes in his journal that “The Beauty of the House is immeasurable its Kindness infinite.” The novel is visually atmospheric, existentially provoking and profoundly haunting. He is alone but for flocks of birds and the mysterious Other (in one of many drily funny touches that puncture any prog-rock grandiosity, the two meet up “on Tuesdays and Thursdays”). He explores its immense and endless Halls, lined with massive Statuary in the lower storeys, the Tide rises and falls, while Clouds float through the upper realms. To the titular Piranesi, this capital-H House is the whole World, and he is only the 15th person to have lived there. Clarke cautiously describes it as being “about a man who lives in a House in which an Ocean is imprisoned”. Piranesi is indeed brilliantly peculiar, and almost impossible to introduce without spoilers, since it subverts expectations throughout. “When I finished it I thought: ‘This is so different, I don’t know whether anyone is going to understand it because it’s so peculiar.’” The long-awaited followup appears on 15 September, and as Clarke admits from her home in Derbyshire, it’s stranger still. Neil Gaiman, an early champion, declared it the finest work of English fantasy in 70 years – but he also predicted that it “would be too unusual and strange for the general public”. It went on to sell 4m copies worldwide and was adapted for a BBC miniseries in 2015. The pages crawl with footnotes, one of the title characters doesn’t appear for the first 200 pages and at the end the reader is left hanging. The prose style mashes together Jane Austen and Charles Dickens for a tale that ranges across all levels of society as well as to fairyland and the battlefields of the Napoleonic war. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is an unlikely story of intellectual obsession, set in a Regency England in which the buried powers of English magic are reawoken by two scholar magicians. Sixteen years ago, Susanna Clarke’s debut novel became a publishing phenomenon. You can use it to search for a file that you created or saved, but don’t recall which directory it was saved to. To find a file in Linux, you can use the Linux find command. The find command in Linux can help you keep track of files on a shared system, locate a file that’s gone missing, or that has been accidentally moved. Here, the user enters a command on the command line which is then executed. As with UNIX, the command line is a fundamental tool to work in Linux. The design principle of making a program do one thing and do it well, and to expect that its output could be the input of another program - even an as yet unwritten program - is often described as the "Unix philosophy." And yet some core utilities, like mkdir, don't accept piped input. Linux is an open-source operating system that was created as a free alternative to UNIX. The principle of piping the output of one command into another command is a core characteristic of Unix-derived operating systems. find is a fundamental and extremely powerful tool for working with the files on your linux system. If we can take the output of the find command and use it automatically as the input of other commands, we can make something happen to the files and directories that find uncovers for us. But there's a way to leverage that power and take things to another level. How to Use Depth In Find Command We can combine two options together to limit the search only between max/min depths. directory-to-search is the starting point from where find starts looking for files. For example, to find a file named test.txt in the current directory, you would use the following command: find. This command will search through all of the subdirectories of the current directory for the specified file. The syntax of find is like this: find directory-to-search criteria action. To find a file in Linux, the easiest way is to use the find command. We can use maxdepth/mindepth to limit down the search to specific depth levels. Linux find command searches for files and folders based on the criteria you define and allows you to perform an action on the search results. The humble find command really packs some power. Find command on Linux is a very powerful tool to search files or directories. It can find and list files by their accessed or modified times, you can use regex patterns, it is recursive by default, and it works with pseudo-files like named pipes (FIFO buffers).Īll of that is fantastically useful. Below is the list of option we can use with the find command. As per the input arguments, the find command will search or locate the files or directories in the Linux operating system. For example, it can search for empty files, executable files, or files owned by a particular user. The find command will accept different arguments like options, expression, file or directory path, etc. It can search for files and directories using a whole raft of different criteria, not just filenames. The Linux find command is powerful and flexible. Timekeeping based on mechanical systems such as pendulums started to gain popularity in the 16th century. This led to the internationally agreed definition of a second being based on atomic time © National Physics Labaratory. Calibration of the caesium standard atomic clock was carried out by the use of the astronomical time scale ephemeris time (ET). The first accurate atomic clock, a caesium standard based on a certain transition of the caesium-133 atom, was built by Louis Essen (pictured right) in 1955 at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Middlesex. This led to the internationally agreed definition of a second being based on atomic time © National Physical Laboratory These clocks, which work by launching a cloud of ultra-cold caesium atoms upwards and interrogating them using microwave radiation, require a vacuum vessel that stands nearly 3m tall in addition to extensive electronics racks and optoelectronic components to cool the atoms to micro-Kelvin temperatures. The state of the art in atomic timekeeping is being driven forward by institutions such as the NPL and similar labs such as the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in Colorado, US, with the latest atomic fountains offering stabilities of one second in more than 100 million years. The beat of Essen’s atomic clock was provided by microwave radiation whose frequency is adjusted to coincide with an atomic absorption, thereby exciting electrons in the atoms to move between particular discrete energy levels. This was the first SI unit to be defined in terms of a fundamental unchanging quantity, paving the way for more robust definitions of the metre and other units. Since 1967, atomic clocks have defined our base unit of time, the second, as the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom. When physicist Louis Essen demonstrated the world’s first accurate atomic clock in 1955 at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK, it was not possible to foresee the impact that it would have on society. Global satellite navigation systems, the internet and utility infrastructures all rely on the accurate timing signals provided by atomic clocks, with transport infrastructures and logistics, safety-of-life critical systems and even global financial transactions increasingly demanding better timing accuracy. Our ability to determine time with ever-increasing precision underpins modern life. Dr John Christensen and Professor Patrick Gill of the Time and Frequency Group at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory and Sir Peter Knight of Imperial College London and past President of the Institute of Physics, describe a new generation of miniature atomic clocks that promise the next revolution in timekeeping. Over the last five decades, the passage of time has been defined by room-sized atomic clocks that are now stable to one second in 100 million years. Strontium ion optical clock © National Physical Laboratory Spotify had already made some inroads into the audiobook arena. “And, with one major player dominating the space, we believe we will expand the market, and create value for users and creators alike.” “Just as we’ve done in podcasting, expect us to play to win,” Ek said during a presentation to investors in June. Spotify’s chief executive, Daniel Ek, has hinted that the company is prepared to invest heavily in order to compete with Audible. Much of the company’s business comes in the form of a monthly or annual membership plan, which gives listeners a certain number of credits that can be redeemed for audiobooks. Audible, the audio production and retail platform owned by Amazon, is by far the biggest audiobook retailer, with more than 760,000 titles, including thousands of audio originals. While Spotify determined, through conversations with publishers, that à la carte sales made the most sense, the company plans to experiment with other models in the future, possibly including one that would incorporate advertising, Zicherman said.Īudiobook listeners already had several platforms to choose from, including Apple, Google and libro.fm, which distributes digital audiobooks for independent booksellers. Still, it’s unclear how Spotify users will adapt to paying for books one at a time, when many are accustomed to streaming music and shows on the platform for free or through a monthly subscription. “And introducing another major outlet that has a built-in listening audience is a great thing.” “It’s introducing more competition into the marketplace,” said Chris Lynch, the president and publisher of the audio division at Simon & Schuster. Getting even a fraction of them to buy audiobooks could mean millions of new listeners for books. Spotify has 188 million paying subscribers globally. “It’s an opportunity to take their heavy listeners in music and podcasts and get those listeners to try audiobooks,” said Michele Cobb, the executive director of the Audio Publishers Association. Many in the publishing world are hopeful that Spotify will convert some of its users into audiobook lovers. Some analysts and investors are also skeptical of Spotify’s heavy investment in podcasts. Their stock price has tumbled over the last year, and is now lower than when the company went public in 2018. While the company has grown substantially in terms of content, subscribers, users and revenue, it has still never reported an annual profit. Spotify’s audiobook push is a gamble for the company, which added podcasts, comedy performances and other spoken-word entertainment to its offerings and announced its ambition to become the leading service for all things audio. For the moment, its audiobook hub is only available to Spotify users in the United States. Zicherman added that Spotify aims to improve curation in the audiobook marketplace, and to study its users’ engagement with different titles so that it can eventually develop an algorithmic audiobook recommendation engine, similar to the way the service recommends music based on listeners’ tastes. “Just as Spotify has changed the way that people create and listen to music and podcasts, we believe we can do the same thing over time with audiobooks, by offering new formats, new ways to interact with content and new ways to discover.” “We believe we have the potential to massively expand the audience for audiobooks,” Nir Zicherman, the head of audiobooks at Spotify, said during a news conference on Monday. Despite the recent growth, they said, audiobooks represent less than a 7 percent share of the wider book market. Spotify’s executives see an even bigger opportunity, they said. Last year, nearly 74,000 audiobooks were released, compared to some 7,200 in 2011. Audiobook revenues totaled $1.67 billion last year, up 25 percent from 2020, according to the Audio Publishers Association. Executives declined to detail the revenue sharing model with publishers, but said that prices will vary per title and will be in line with other retailers.ĭigital audio has grown by double digits year-over-year for more than a decade. In a surprising shift away from its all-you-can-listen ethos, Spotify is selling audiobooks à la carte, rather than offering a subscription service. Now Spotify’s move into audiobooks could reshape what has become a rapidly growing category for publishers. The company transformed the music industry when it gave listeners access to a seemingly limitless catalog of songs through its streaming music service more than a decade ago. Spotify made the lucrative audiobook market more competitive on Tuesday, when it debuted a new hub on its app with more than 300,000 titles, among them books by best-selling authors like Colleen Hoover, Michelle Obama and Stephen King. It is 2020 and looking at the rate at which the number of users on the web is increasing each day, it is pretty evident that we have reached a point where we are highly reliant on the internet for various tasks we do in a day - be it related to work, information, or even entertainment. The game will do this a lot, with more than one hundred and fifty ghost events according to its journal. Exploring the hospital grounds and surrounding was such a thrilling experience but the horror does fall over, relying almost entirely on pop-up, rollercoaster-style jump scares and loud noises, wrestling control away from you to show you the ghost that just popped up. Whilst it’s plenty creepy, with a dark abandoned hospital environment absolutely dripping in atmosphere and environmental storytelling, it’s not, well, scary. As a whole, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse‘s gameplay is a refreshingly slow burn with plenty of breathing room.Īs a horror game, unfortunately, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will often stumble. It’s a fun change of pace that adds a little bit of variety to the franchise as a whole, not just this game. To make up for this, Kirishima will often deal with numerous ghosts at one time, making his segments a little bit more action-oriented. Whilst this functionally does the same thing as the Camera Obscura when it comes to dispatching ghosts, there are a few key differences, namely that it doesn’t restrict your field of view, as well as being much quicker to charge up. Detective Kirishima will instead be using the Spirit Stone Flashlight. The only challenge really comes in navigating around these really tight arenas without getting hit, but even then, with the game’s scoring system, you will get a wealth of healing items and more powerful rolls of film.Īlso, for the first time in the series, a weapon that isn’t the camera obscura is available. This will allow you to rapidly take photos that can easily dispatch ghosts or deal massive amounts of damage. If you hit perfect timing by nailing the trigger on an attack, you will trigger a fatal frame. Locking on will help this a lot and will sometimes make combat feel a little too easy. The trick is trying to keep the ghost in your view and for it not to get around you and through walls. Do this multiple times and you will eventually defeat the ghost. Keep the ghost in the frame to charge up the power of your camera and then take a photo to deal damage. Fatal Frame‘s combat has always been a unique one and there’s not much to note here about it. Of course, being a Fatal Frame game, you will quickly come across the Camera Obscura, a camera with the ability to interact with the supernatural and pacify spirits. Oh no, shame there isn’t a way to… I don’t know… move it Regardless, the exploration was a real high point here and I enjoyed every minute of my time exploring Rogetsu Island. This can occasionally be a little bit awkward with the flashlight controls not being perfectly moved over from the Wiimote (yep, this was a Wii game at a point) to a traditional gamepad. I was scouring each and every room with a fine pick, moving the flashlight around to uncover a wealth of uncoverable items, from resources to upgrade points and tons of lore files. But that doesn’t matter because I enjoyed just how detailed and interesting the environment was. And when I say slowly, I really mean it, the character’s movement is glacial and sprinting doesn’t really help. Much of the game is slowly creeping your way through a hospital to find clues. Unlike Maiden of Black Water, this game has a more traditional structure for a survival horror game. Each chapter peels away another layer as you start to figure out what is going on, jumping between four different characters with some excellent twists and characters that will engage you from start to finish becoming the most engaging storyline in the series. Lunar Eclipse‘s story is one that throws you right into the middle of it, setting up an intriguing mystery in a brilliantly told story that reveals itself as it switches between four protagonists in a non-linear order. Following them is Detective Kirishima, who is also looking for closure and to rescue them once again. However, with two of the girls now mysteriously dead, the remaining survivors head back to Rogetsu Island to uncover their memories and put a stop to the vengeful spirits. Ten years later and the survivors are suffering from memory loss, with only vague visions of what happened during said ritual. Five girls were kidnapped from Rogetsu Island by a serial killer performing secret spiritual rituals that went wrong. Zero soon makes his arrival in Neotopia as he rescues Shute's neighbor, Sayla, from a nasty fall. Now known as Deathscythe, the Knight of Darkness, he began to serve under Tallgeese. His ultimate attack is the Super Magical Violet Tornado, a strong wind gust filled with Princess Rose petals. His spells include: I-Field, a protective barrier Lacroan Crescent, a horizontal beam attack and Zero Dispell Sword, which nullifies magic, such as the magic used to transform Pawn Leos. He is able to summon his sword, the Vatras Sword, and shield, which enables him to use magic attacks. Like many Lacroan natives, Zero has access to a degree of magical powers. Despite this, Zero is an important figure in a Lacroan prophecy, which regards him as the "Chosen One" who will save Lacroa. When out of combat, he often uses his magic to produce flowers to the annoyance of his teammate Bakunetsumaru, usually on the tip of his swords. He's easily swayed by women, especially damsels in distress. Flamboyant and noble, Zero sees himself as something of a gentleman and has an ego to match.
